What are sleep disorders?
Millions of people suffer from chronic sleep disorders that affect all aspects of their lives. Left untreated, sleep disorders cause fatigue, irritability, depression, lost productivity, and other serious physical and emotional problems. The most common sleep disorders are:
  • Chronic insomnia is a treatable disorder in which people continually have problems falling asleep and staying asleep.
  • Sleep apnea is a treatable disorder in which a person stops breathing during sleep – sometimes hundreds of times during the night.
  • Narcolepsy is a treatable disorder in which a person falls asleep suddenly many times a day.

Diagnosing sleep disorder
If you are having problems sleeping or experiencing symptoms of a sleep disorder, make an appointment to see your primary care physician. A physical exam and screening will help evaluate your need for a sleep diagnostic test, known as a polysomnography.

Sleep diagnostic test
The Sleep Center of Lakeview, located at Lakeview Hospital in Stillwater, offers comprehensive testing for sleep disorders. This study evaluates the amount and quality of your sleep. The test is performed at Lakeview Hospital during normal sleep hours. In preparation for the test, a sleep disorders technologist places sensors on your head, chest and legs. While you are sleeping in comfortable, homelike surroundings, the specialist monitors:

  • Brain waves
  • Eye movements
  • Muscle activity
  • Breathing
  • Heart rate
  • Oxygen levels
  • Body position

Sleep disorders treatment
Once the test is completed, your results are recorded on a computer and a physician, board certified in sleep disorders, will interpret the results and recommend an appropriate treatment plan. If the results confirm that you have a sleep disorder, treatment options may include:

  • Lifestyle modifications (weight loss, stop smoking, changing sleep positions, medications)
  • CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure)
  • Referral to an ENT physician
  • Oral appliances
  • Surgery

Does insurance cover testing?
Most insurance providers cover the cost of the diagnostic sleep test and treatment options. Because every insurance plan varies, you should check with your carrier about specific coverage. A physician referral is required. If you are concerned about your sleeping patterns, talk to your physician. Treatment can help you regain your quality of life.
